And, as with almost every digital obituary, the statement is part theatre and part poorly explained truth.
SEO is not dead. What has changed is the context in which it competed. For many years, the game was relatively clear: you wanted to appear on Google, preferably as high as possible, and you wanted to turn that click into a call, a booking, or a form submission. The model was not perfect, but it was understandable. Today that model still exists, but it coexists with another layer that can no longer be ignored: the answer engines and generative AI systems we all know.
What is really happening in 2026 is that digital discovery has become more fragmented and more demanding. Google remains important, but it is no longer the only place where a potential customer decides whether or not a business exists. Today there are also AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, generative answers within search engines and, above all, many queries that no longer end in a click.
For a local business, this changes quite a few things. For years, industry professionals have thought of visibility as a fight to make it into ten links. Even today, to win these contests, the sitemaps of many companies still look like this (almost always with the same underlying hope: publish more to see if something sticks):

The reality is now much more uncomfortable: in many searches, the user no longer chooses between ten results. They read a synthetic answer generated by Google and often decide on that basis.
That is why limiting yourself to SEO is no longer enough today. We must also talk about GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization: the discipline that works to make your brand understandable, retrievable, and citable by generative systems. It is no longer enough to be present on the map. These systems need to understand clearly who you are, what you do, and why they can use you as a reference.
From click to citation
According to Search Engine Land, 2026 marks a turning point: being visible means becoming a source that an AI considers clear and reliable enough to retrieve when building an answer. Appearing in a list of results is no longer sufficient. It seems like a small nuance, but it completely changes the way you compete.
Previously, the battle was to appear. Now there is also the battle to be cited, and it does not work in exactly the same way. A page could rank very highly on Google without being well prepared for an AI to extract anything useful from it. The opposite can also happen: a page can be very useful to an answer engine while having local authority that is too weak to appear reliable in Google's eyes.
Discovery has also become more conversational. Not everything now happens through queries such as plumber sitges, restaurant vilanova, or hotel garraf. It is increasingly common for a search to sound like this:
- “which plumber can come today?”
- “where can I book in Sitges near the promenade?”
- “which company looks most reliable for building my website?”
- “which business in the area has the best reviews for this?”
The questions are longer, more natural, and more contextual. They imply things that users previously resolved by comparing results manually: urgency, reputation, opening hours, and so on. This forces us to think about visibility differently.
Local SEO and GEO do not compete with each other
This is where a false dichotomy has been manufactured. Some suggest that GEO will replace local SEO, as if we had to choose between one and the other. To us, this begins with a bad diagnosis. GEO only makes sense when there is decent local SEO beneath it. Without that layer, talking about GEO is mostly posturing.
As Search Engine Land explains in this article about GEO and local SEO, the foundations remain practically the same ones we already knew: a well-managed Google Business Profile, consistent local citations, genuine reviews, decent technical architecture, content that clearly explains what you do and where you do it, and enough evidence for Google and other systems to consider you a reliable entity.
Without these foundations, AI engines have much less to work with. In fact, platforms such as Perplexity or Google's generative layers often start from live web search or indexed sources that already carry traditional authority signals. If your business is inconsistent, confusing, or invisible in the world of local SEO, it will most likely remain so in the world of GEO too.
Seen this way, it makes more sense to think of it as one strategy rather than two separate battles. Local SEO gives you presence. GEO helps make that presence easier to retrieve and recommend within a chat. Ultimately, the problem is the same, merely viewed from two different angles.
Local SEO remains the foundation
We have already said it, but it is worth insisting because many people look for shortcuts too soon. If you run a local business, several things remain essential that the noise around AI has neither cancelled nor will cancel.

A well-managed Google Business Profile. It remains a pillar. And it continues to be surprising how many businesses treat it as something minor when, in reality, it is one of the elements that most affects whether you are discovered. Correct category, reliable opening hours, well-described services, good photos, responses to reviews... it all adds up.

Consistent NAP. Name, address, and phone number. No absurd variations, no different versions, and no disorder between your Google listing, website, and social media. Consistency remains a signal of reliability.

Quality reviews. They matter because they help rankings, yes, but above all because they describe the business through the eyes of a real person. This already carried weight on Google. In a generative environment, it carries even more. Well-written, specific, recurring reviews build useful associations: speed, service, punctuality, specialisation, trust, or urgency. An AI understands your business better when third parties describe it consistently.

Clear service pages. More than an inflated page, you need one that explains what you do, who it is for, which area you cover, what makes you different, and what the person should do next. We are not merely talking about copy here; we are talking about information architecture.

Reasonably serious technical SEO. A slow, poorly structured website with basic problems remains an issue, even if you later add new files for AI. Technical architecture does not guarantee visibility on its own, but bad architecture can certainly sabotage it.
GEO, in plain language
GEO is the art of making your brand citable by AIs. It does not involve tricks to make an AI “reward” you. It means building a digital presence that an answer engine can use without having to guess too many things.
If your business is ambiguous, the AI will cite you less effectively. If the information is scattered or contradictory, it will tend to trust third parties more or simply not recommend you. Ultimately, GEO adds a semantic requirement to what we were already doing with local SEO: existing is not enough; you must exist in a structured way.
What GEO adds to these foundations
This is where many businesses get stuck. They think GEO is something completely new when it is really an evolution of work that has existed for many years. The useful question is simpler: is your website prepared to be understood easily? Ranking still matters, but how the information is written and organised now carries a great deal of weight too.
Schema markup and structured data
It is probably one of the least visible and most useful layers. When you correctly mark your business as an entity and structure the information with JSON-LD using schemas such as LocalBusiness, Organization, FAQPage, or other relevant ones, you reduce ambiguity. Instead of leaving the system to infer what each thing is, you make it much easier and much more precise.
For a local business, this matters because many of the questions that answer engines resolve need very specific data: opening hours, location, services, indicative prices, and so on. Without structured data, all of this is mixed into the text. With structured data, the information becomes much easier to ingest.
llms.txt and other emerging signals
It is wise to temper expectations for llms.txt, because there is already too much hype around this file. It does not perform miracles, but nor is it frivolous. It can be a useful layer for indicating which pages matter most to you, how the information is organised, and where there is data that deserves particular attention.
On its own, it will not fix a poorly written, slow, or semantically weak website. But within a clean architecture, it can contribute. The same logic applies to almost every GEO layer: they do not replace the foundations, but they help make those foundations clearer.
Content architecture designed for answer engines
LLMs do not “read” a page as a person does. They do not necessarily move from beginning to end, evaluating the prose as if it were an essay. They extract fragments, compare blocks... and try to build a plausible synthesis. This has very specific implications.
For example, a service page that immediately answers a natural question tends to work better than one full of vague introductions. Sections with an explicit heading and a direct answer below also tend to work better than dense, heavy blocks. The same applies to honest FAQs and clear summaries.
Ultimately, it is quite simple: an AI prefers a clear page to one written by a jack of all trades and master of none. If it has to choose between a section that explains “what the service includes” in four clean sentences and another that promises “comprehensive solutions to boost your digital presence”, we already know which will be more useful. And, frankly, the same is true for the reader.
AEO: answering better, not merely repeating keywords
Here the term AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) also helps explain the change. In many queries, the objective is no longer merely to rank for a keyword. You want to look like a plausible, citable answer. That means framing questions better, writing more direct answers, removing unnecessary jargon, and organising information into modules.
You do not need to write like a data table. The most useful thing is to understand that, if someone is going to ask “how long will it take you to come?”, “do you serve this area?”, or “what exactly does this service include?”, your website should answer without forcing them to interpret too much.
Genuine local context
Repeating “Sitges”, “Garraf”, or “Barcelona” twenty times fixes nothing. That is old SEO, and poorly executed old SEO at that. What you need to do is demonstrate a genuine relationship with the area: local use cases, seasonal needs, emergencies, customer types, neighbourhoods, differences between towns, or even language that only makes sense within that context.
An AI is much better than it might appear at first glance at detecting when a business speaks from inside a context and when it is merely scattering keywords because that is what is expected. The reader detects it too.
Reviews, sentiment, and third-party corroboration
There is another element that will probably gain importance: aggregate analysis of sentiment and semantic associations found in reviews, directories, forums, and other third-party mentions. If users in many different places describe a business as fast, reliable, punctual, or particularly useful for a specific need, that association becomes stronger.
This is why reviews do not matter only for the number of stars. They matter for the language they contain. At a local level, this is especially valuable because it helps anchor a reputation in real situations: emergencies, seasons, customer types, or problems specific to the area.
The big mistake: thinking GEO is a shortcut
It is not. No file or prompt can replace weak foundations. If a slow website, generic text, or very little real authority sits behind it, GEO will not fix it for you. It is better to say so than to sell illusions.
In fact, part of the problem is that many people are trying to do exactly what they did with SEO years ago: look for the mechanics before understanding the system. When this happens, the result is usually another layer of forced content. More pages, more artificial FAQs, more blocks that look optimised and that nobody would read voluntarily.
Good judgement here is fairly sober. First, make the business clear. Then make its local authority verifiable. Only then should the information be packaged so an AI can extract it without getting lost.
Why this matters more to a local business than to a large brand
Because a local business does not need to dominate the internet. It needs to command a specific part of the customer's mental and geographical map. The aim is not to beat Amazon but to become the best plausible answer to a specific need in a specific area.
And, looked at properly, this is very good news. It means there is still plenty of room to compete through clarity, structure, reputation, and sound judgement. A digital presence that appears reliable (because it truly is) beats one with 500 pages that contribute nothing.
A large brand can survive mediocre pages thanks to recognition, budget, or distribution. A local business cannot. When an AI recommends three options and leaves you out, it is not penalising you “just because”; it is simply choosing the sources it has understood better and that appear more consistent. It hurts, but ultimately it reflects what you have built with considerable accuracy.
A sensible strategy for 2026
If we had to summarise it in a single idea (what is now called TD;LR), it would be this:
Local SEO to exist. GEO to be recommended.
First, you need solid foundations:
- a well-managed Google listing
- a fast website
- clear content
- consistent data
- useful reviews
- genuine local authority
Then you need to take the next step:
- structure the information better
- answer natural questions
- mark entities clearly
- package services semantically
- and turn the website into a source that answer engines can understand
There is no need to be alarmist and think we are facing a total revolution. Still, the demands clearly rise from this point onwards. In 2026, the winner is not necessarily whoever publishes more, repeats more keywords, or adds more tools because they sound modern. The winner is whoever is easier to understand, appears more reliable, and answers better. The rest is noise with new vocabulary.
And this, fortunately, fits a well-designed website far better than a generic content factory. It also fits a small business that knows its area well much better than a company trying to sound large through inflated language.
